All three chipsets run the same AM5 processors at the same speed, and all three allow CPU overclocking. X870 adds two guarantees over B850: USB4 ports and a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot. X870E adds more chipset connectivity on top, for boards with many M.2 slots and fast USB ports. For a typical gaming PC with one graphics card and one or two SSDs, B850 is enough. The X chipsets are worth paying for only if you will use what they add.

All three sit on the AM5 socket, which AMD has said is supported through 2027 and beyond. That commitment belongs to the socket, so no chipset here will outlast another for processor upgrades.
What is identical across all three
Processor support, memory support, CPU overclocking, memory overclocking and EXPO profiles are the same. So is performance: with the same CPU, DDR5 kit and graphics card, you will not measure a meaningful difference in games or applications between a B850 board and an X870E board. The graphics card and the main M.2 SSD connect directly to the processor on all of them, so the chipset is not in the path for the parts that matter most to speed. What X870 adds over B850
USB4 is required. Every X870 and X870E board has USB4 ports, which run at up to 40 Gbps and can carry a display signal. They are useful for fast external SSDs, docks and some professional audio and video equipment. If everything you plug in is a keyboard, mouse, headset and the odd memory stick, you will never notice them. A few B850 boards include USB4, but it is uncommon; check the listing.
PCIe 5.0 for the graphics slot is guaranteed. On B850 it is up to the board maker, and many boards run the main slot at PCIe 4.0. Today's graphics cards lose little or nothing on PCIe 4.0 x16, so this is about keeping options open for a future card more than any benefit now. PCIe 5.0: do you need it has the detail.
Those two points are the main difference. In terms of general chipset connectivity, X870 is much closer to B850 than the X in its name suggests. If you want PCIe 5.0 graphics without USB4, a B850 board that lists a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, or an older B650E board, does the same job.
What X870E adds over X870
X870E provides more chipset lanes and ports than X870. Board makers use them to fit more M.2 slots, more high-speed USB ports and faster networking without as much sharing of bandwidth between them. That is why X870E is the chipset of the flagship boards, and why those boards are often large.
The benefit is real for a workstation-style build: four or five NVMe SSDs, a capture card, a fast network card and a desk full of USB devices. For a gaming PC it goes unused.
One catch to check on any USB4 board
The USB4 controller needs PCIe lanes of its own, and on many X870 and X870E boards it shares them with an M.2 slot or affects how other slots run. The result can be that filling a particular M.2 slot reduces the bandwidth of another slot or of the USB4 ports. How this is arranged varies by board, and the manual spells it out in a table of shared bandwidth. If you plan to fill every M.2 slot, read that table before buying. What varies by board on all three
The number of M.2 slots, power delivery, WiFi version, audio, the count of rear USB ports and the ease-of-build features are decided by the board maker. The X chipsets mostly appear on better-equipped boards, so an X870 board often has stronger power delivery and more M.2 slots than a typical B850 board, but that is a consequence of where makers position them and not a rule of the chipset. An upper mid-range B850 board can match a basic X870 board in everything except USB4. If you are fitting a 16-core processor and will load it for hours, read motherboard VRM explained and judge the board, not the chipset.
Older AM5 chipsets remain an alternative. X670E offers similar connectivity to X870E and guaranteed PCIe 5.0 for graphics and M.2, without the USB4 requirement. Older stock may need a BIOS update for Ryzen 9000; see BIOS updates and CPU compatibility.
Verdict by type of buyer
- Gaming PC, one graphics card, one or two SSDs: B850. Put the saving into the graphics card or processor. If B650 is cheaper still, read B850 vs B650.
- You use USB4 or Thunderbolt devices: X870. It is the least expensive way to get USB4 guaranteed on AM5.
- You want a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot guaranteed for a future card: X870, or a B850 or B650E board that lists one.
- Content creation or workstation use with many SSDs and peripherals: X870E, chosen by reading the shared-bandwidth table for the exact board.
- Small build: start from the form factor. Mini-ITX boards are few on any of these chipsets, so take the board with the ports you need and let the chipset follow.
- Buying for appearance or the flagship name: that is a legitimate choice, but be clear it is the reason. How much to spend on a motherboard shows where extra money stops buying function.

Is X870E faster than B850 for gaming?
