How much to spend on a motherboard

Spend enough to get a board that runs your processor at full speed, has the slots and ports you will use, and can be updated easily, and then stop. For most builds that means a mainstream B-series board. A motherboard does not make a processor or graphics card faster, so beyond that point every extra pound buys connectivity, convenience or appearance, not performance. If the board costs more than the processor, you should be able to name the specific feature you are paying for.

The bands overlap, and a chipset is not a band. A well-equipped B850 board can cost more than a plain X870 one and be the better board. Judge the individual board; motherboard chipsets explained sets out what the chipset itself decides.

Entry level: what is missing

An entry-level board will run a suitable processor exactly as fast as a board costing five times as much. What you give up is headroom and convenience, and it is worth knowing the specific omissions, because some are permanent:

If none of those affects your build, buy the entry board and spend the difference elsewhere. If two or three do, the step to mainstream is the best-value money in the whole range.

Mainstream: where most builds should stop

This is the band the makers compete hardest in, and it shows. A sound mainstream board has power delivery that handles any mainstream processor at stock settings, including the eight-core gaming chips most people buy; enough M.2 slots for a system drive and a games drive with one to spare; 2.5 Gb Ethernet; WiFi and Bluetooth if you choose that version; and, on many models, a flashback button. On AM5 it will take the next processor generation too, since AMD has said the socket is supported through 2027 and beyond.

Within this band, choose on the practical details rather than the brand or the styling: the number of M.2 slots and whether they have heatsinks, the rear USB count, WiFi or not, and the layout of slots against the thickness of your graphics card. Upper-mid: paying for specific things

There are good reasons to go above mainstream, and each is a particular need:

If you cannot point to one of these, the mainstream board will serve you equally well.

Flagship: what extra money stops buying

Above the upper-mid band, returns fall away sharply. Power delivery on a flagship board far exceeds what any desktop processor draws outside extreme overclocking with exotic cooling. Frame rates do not change. Memory overclocking records are set on these boards, but a normal memory profile runs the same on a good mainstream board. What remains is 10 Gb networking, extra Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, more M.2 slots than most cases have drives for, onboard buttons and displays for bench overclocking, and appearance.

Those are real features, and if you need 10 Gb networking a flagship board may be a tidy way to get it. But they are the only honest reasons. A flagship board will not make the PC faster, will not make it last longer in any way you can measure, and loses value quickly once the next generation arrives.

Where to put the money instead

In a gaming PC, the order of what changes the experience is clear: the graphics card first, the processor second, then enough memory and a large enough SSD, and the motherboard some way behind. The difference between a mainstream and an upper-mid board is often the difference between two graphics card tiers or two processor tiers, and either of those shows up in every game you play. A better power supply and a better cooler also do more for day-to-day reliability and noise than a dearer board.

Does a more expensive motherboard improve gaming performance?

No, provided the cheaper board runs the processor at full speed and the memory at its rated profile, which any sound mainstream board does. Frame rates come from the graphics card and processor. A dearer board adds ports, slots, stronger power delivery and features, not speed.

Is a cheap motherboard bad for my PC?

Not if it suits the parts. An entry-level board with a 65 W processor is a perfectly good combination. It becomes a problem when a basic board is paired with a high-end processor its power delivery cannot sustain, or when you later need slots and ports it does not have.

Should the motherboard cost more than the CPU?

Usually not. In a balanced build the board costs less than the processor. If yours costs more, check that you are paying for something you will use, such as USB4, 10 Gb networking, many M.2 slots or a small form factor, and not just for a higher model number.

Is it worth buying an expensive motherboard for future upgrades?

Only up to a point. A mainstream AM5 board already takes future AM5 processors, and on Intel a new processor generation has often meant a new socket regardless of what the board cost. Buying for the slots and ports you expect to need in the next few years is sensible. Buying a flagship in the hope it will stay current is not.
