B850 vs B650: which AM5 chipset to buy

B850 and B650 run the same AM5 processors at the same speed, and both allow CPU and memory overclocking. B850 is the newer chipset: it guarantees a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, and every B850 board supports Ryzen 9000 out of the box. B650 is older, often cheaper, and on many boards just as capable. Buy whichever well-equipped board costs less on the day, with one condition: if you choose B650 for a Ryzen 9000 processor, make sure the BIOS question is covered.

There is a third option, B650E, which guarantees PCIe 5.0 for both the graphics slot and an M.2 slot. On that one point it is ahead of plain B850, which guarantees only the M.2 slot. If PCIe 5.0 graphics matters to you, compare B650E boards, B850 boards that list a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, and X870.

What is the same

Most of what matters. Both chipsets sit on the AM5 socket, take DDR5 only, and support every AM5 processor family: Ryzen 7000, 8000G and 9000. Both allow CPU overclocking, memory overclocking and EXPO memory profiles. With the same processor, memory and graphics card, a B650 board and a B850 board perform the same in games and applications. AMD has said AM5 is supported through 2027 and beyond, and that applies to the socket, so neither chipset has a longer future than the other in terms of processors.

The underlying chipset hardware is also closely related. B850 is best understood as B650 with stricter minimum requirements, not as a new design.

What B850 changes

A PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot is guaranteed. On B650 it was left to the board maker, and many cheaper B650 boards have PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots only. With B850 you do not need to check. Whether you need a PCIe 5.0 SSD is another matter: for games and everyday use a good PCIe 4.0 drive is hard to tell apart from one. See PCIe 5.0: do you need it.

PCIe 5.0 for graphics becomes possible. B850 allows it but does not require it, so some boards have a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and others stay at PCIe 4.0. Check the listing. Current graphics cards lose little or nothing on a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, so treat this as a nice-to-have.

Newer boards around the chipset. B850 boards were designed in 2024 and 2025, so they tend to come with newer WiFi, more USB-C and easier M.2 and graphics card release mechanisms. These are board-level features and vary, but the average B850 board is a little better equipped than the average B650 board of the same tier.

Ryzen 9000 support from the factory. Every B850 board was released after Ryzen 9000, so any of them will start with the original 9000-series chips. For processors released after the board itself, such as later X3D models, check the CPU support list as you would on any board. This is the most practical difference of the four.

The BIOS question on B650

B650 launched in 2022 alongside Ryzen 7000. Ryzen 8000G and 9000 processors came later, and a B650 board needs a recent enough BIOS to recognise them. Boards made since then ship with it; boards that have sat in a warehouse since before those processors were released may not, and a board with too old a BIOS will not start with the newer chip.

There are three ways to deal with this. Choose a B650 board with a CPU-free BIOS update button (ASUS BIOS FlashBack, MSI Flash BIOS Button, Gigabyte Q-Flash Plus or ASRock BIOS Flashback), which most B650 boards have but not all. Or pair the board with one of the original Ryzen 7000 processors, the generation B650 launched with (the later 7000X3D models can still need an update on very early stock). Or buy B850. The issue is most likely with Amazon Warehouse boards, because an open-box B650 board could date from any point since 2022. What varies by board on both

Neither chipset name tells you the number of M.2 slots, the strength of the power delivery, whether WiFi is included, how many rear USB ports there are or the audio quality. A well-equipped B650 board beats a stripped-down B850 board on all of those. Compare like with like: look at two boards of the same family from the same maker, one on each chipset, and see what the newer one adds for the difference in price. Also watch for B840, which sounds like a sibling of B850 and is not. B840 has no CPU overclocking and runs its chipset lanes at PCIe 3.0. It is an entry-level chipset.

Is B850 faster than B650?

No. With the same processor, memory and graphics card the two perform the same. B850 raises the minimum specification, chiefly a guaranteed PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, and B850 boards tend to have newer fittings.

Does B650 support Ryzen 9000 processors?

Yes, with a recent enough BIOS. Boards made after Ryzen 9000 was released ship ready; older stock may need a BIOS update first. A board with a CPU-free update button removes the risk.

Does B850 have PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card?

Only on some boards. B850 guarantees PCIe 5.0 for an M.2 slot and leaves PCIe 5.0 graphics to the board maker. Check the listing for a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot. B650E, X870 and X870E guarantee it.
