B760 is the mainstream chipset for Intel's LGA1700 socket, launched in early 2023 for 13th generation Core and used with 12th, 13th and 14th generation processors. It supports memory overclocking and XMP profiles but not CPU overclocking, which suits the non-K Core i5 and Core i7 chips most people buy. What B760 is and who it is for
In the 700-series, Z790 is the overclocking chipset, H770 is a little-used middle step and B760 is the volume seller. It replaced B660, and the entry-level H610 continued beneath it, because Intel never released a 700-series chipset below B760.
B760 is for builders who will run the processor as Intel ships it. A Core i5-12400F, 13400F or 14400F, or a non-K Core i7, gains nothing from a Z-series board beyond extra slots and ports. Compatible CPUs and the BIOS question
B760 boards support 12th and 13th generation Core from their first BIOS. 14th generation chips came out in late 2023, so a board manufactured before then may need a BIOS update before it will start one. Boards made since ship with a suitable BIOS, but with older stock and open-box units you cannot be sure which you will get. Check the board's CPU support list for the BIOS version your chip needs, and prefer a board with a BIOS flashback button if you have no older processor to hand. DDR4 or DDR5
LGA1700 processors work with either memory type, but each board is built for one. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are keyed differently and will not fit each other's slots, and no board takes both. Makers usually sell the same B760 model in two versions, with DDR4 or D4 in the name of the DDR4 one. Read the memory line of the listing rather than trusting the title.
The DDR4 version is a sound way to carry over memory you own. For a new build with new memory, DDR5 is usually the better choice, since it is what newer platforms use. PCIe: CPU lanes and chipset lanes
12th to 14th generation processors offer PCIe 5.0 x16 for graphics and a PCIe 4.0 x4 link for the main M.2 slot. Whether a given B760 board wires its graphics slot for PCIe 5.0 is up to the maker, and many budget models use PCIe 4.0, which makes no practical difference with today's graphics cards. A B660 board is a near-equivalent if its BIOS is current. H610 saves a little but drops XMP and two memory slots, and H770 adds connectivity on the few boards that use it.
What to check on the listing
- Memory type. DDR4 or DDR5, matched to the memory you own or plan to buy.
- Power delivery. B760 boards differ widely here. A basic board may hold a Core i7 or i9 to lower power limits under sustained load, or run its VRM hot. Check reviews and the CPU support list; motherboard VRM explained has the background.
- Size. Most are micro-ATX or ATX, with some mini-ITX.

Is B760 still worth buying?
LGA1700 ended with 14th generation, so there is no later processor to upgrade to. B760 still makes sense in two cases: you already have an LGA1700 chip and need a board for it, or you are pricing a complete build where a discounted 12th to 14th generation chip and, perhaps, DDR4 you already own bring the total well below a newer platform.
