LGA1700 is the Intel desktop socket for 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core processors. It launched in 2021, was replaced by LGA1851 in 2024, and is unusual in that a board can be built for DDR4 or for DDR5. What LGA1700 is
It is a land grid array socket with 1,700 sprung pins in the motherboard and flat pads on the processor. The socket is rectangular rather than square, taller than the LGA1200 it replaced, and nothing from earlier Intel generations fits it.
As with every LGA socket, the pins in the board are the weak point. A bent pin can disable a memory channel or a PCIe slot, or stop the board starting at all. On an open-box board, look across the socket under a bright light before you fit anything. The pins should form an even pattern with no gaps or glints out of line.

Compatible processors and memory
All three processor generations work across both chipset series, with one condition. A 600-series board (Z690, B660, H610 and the rest) that left the factory before the 13th or 14th generation launched may need a BIOS update before it will start one of those chips. Whatever you buy, update the BIOS once it is running, because later versions include Intel's revised default power settings for 13th and 14th generation processors.
The memory question is the one to get right. Each LGA1700 board is built for DDR4 or for DDR5. The slots are keyed differently, no board takes both, and makers often sell near-identical models in each version. DDR4 versions usually carry DDR4 or D4 in the model name. Match the board to the memory you own or plan to buy, and read DDR4 vs DDR5 motherboards if you are undecided.
Processors with an F suffix have no integrated graphics, so the board's video outputs will not work with one.
Chipsets that pair with LGA1700
- Z790 and Z690: the only LGA1700 chipsets that overclock the processor, and the ones to pair with a K-series chip you intend to tune.
- B760 and B660: the mainstream choice. Memory overclocking through XMP is supported, CPU overclocking is not.
- H770: between B760 and Z790 for connectivity, with few boards on sale.
- H610: the entry level, with two memory slots and no overclocking of any kind.
H670 and the business Q670 and W680 chipsets exist too but are rarely seen in UK retail. The PCIe 5.0 graphics lanes come from the processor, so they are not limited to Z-series boards. Some boards also offer a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot by borrowing lanes from the graphics slot, which is a board feature rather than a chipset one, so check the listing. Cooler compatibility
LGA1700 changed the cooler mounting. The holes are further apart than on LGA1200 and the LGA115x sockets before it, and the processor sits lower, so an older Intel cooler needs an LGA1700 bracket from its maker. In the other direction the news is better: LGA1700 and LGA1851 share the same mounting, so a cooler bought for this socket will move to Intel's newer platform.
Platform lifespan and upgrade path
LGA1700 is complete. The 14th generation of 2023 was its last, and no faster processors are coming. What remains is an upgrade path within the socket: a system built around a 12th generation Core i3 or i5 can take a 13th or 14th generation Core i7 or i9 after a BIOS update, provided the board's power delivery is up to it. Buying into LGA1700 in 2026
For a new build the case rests on price. Boards and processors generally cost less than their LGA1851 equivalents, and the DDR4 versions let you carry memory over from an older PC. Against that, you are buying into a socket with no future, and LGA1851 vs LGA1700 weighs the two.

What to look for
- DDR4 or DDR5, confirmed in the specification and not just the title.
- A BIOS update button on any 600-series board you plan to pair with a 13th or 14th generation chip.
- Power delivery to match the processor. A Core i9 on a basic H610 board is a poor pairing.
- M.2 slots and rear ports, which vary by board far more than by chipset.

Can I reuse my LGA1200 cooler on LGA1700?
Only with an LGA1700 mounting kit. The hole spacing and the height of the processor both changed. Many cooler makers supply the bracket separately, so check with the maker of yours.
Is LGA1700 a dead platform?
There will be no new processors for it, so in that sense yes. It still runs three generations of fast chips, boards are plentiful and well priced, and that makes it a reasonable buy for an upgrade or a budget build. For a platform with a future, look at LGA1851 or AM5.
