If there is any chance the PC will not sit next to the router, or you want Bluetooth for a controller or headphones, buy the WiFi version of the board. It normally costs less than adding a decent card afterwards, and on most boards it is the only thing that gives you Bluetooth. Which WiFi generation you get matters far less: WiFi 6 is already faster than most home broadband, and WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 only help if your router supports them too.

Link rates are what the adapter and router negotiate in ideal conditions. Real throughput through a wall is a fraction of them. The practical differences are these:
- WiFi 6 is enough for almost everyone. With a good signal it can approach the speed of a gigabit broadband line, which is more than most households have.
- WiFi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, which is far less congested than 5 GHz in a block of flats or a terrace. Range is shorter, so it helps most in the same room as the router or the one next to it.
- WiFi 7 doubles the channel width again and can use two bands together, which improves both speed and consistency. In the UK the part of the 6 GHz band open to WiFi is narrower than in the United States, so there is room for fewer of the widest channels. WiFi 7 features also need Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
All generations are backwards compatible. A WiFi 7 board connects happily to a WiFi 5 router; it just behaves like a WiFi 5 device. Unless you own or plan to buy a matching router, a newer WiFi generation on the board changes nothing, which is why it should not be a reason to pay much more for one board over another. It is a fair tie-breaker between two similar boards.
Bluetooth comes with the WiFi
On a motherboard, WiFi and Bluetooth are one module. The board makers do not fit Bluetooth separately, so the non-WiFi version of a board has no Bluetooth either. People often discover this when a wireless controller or a pair of headphones will not pair with a newly built PC. The Bluetooth version depends on the module: recent WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 modules generally provide Bluetooth 5.2 to 5.4, and the board's specification will say which.
How to tell whether a board has WiFi
Most makers sell the same board with and without it, and the name is the only difference. WIFI in the model name is the usual marker. Gigabyte often uses AX for WiFi 6 or 6E models and WIFI7 for the newest, and AC in an older name means WiFi 5. The non-WiFi version has no marker at all, so its name is simply shorter. On a rear-panel photo, a WiFi board has two gold antenna connectors, usually close to the audio jacks.
Take extra care with open-box and marketplace listings, where a title can be cut short or copied from the sister model. The specification table and the photo of the rear panel are more reliable than the title.
The module and the antenna
The wireless module is a small card in a dedicated M.2 slot (Key E, not the same as an SSD slot), normally hidden under the rear I/O cover. The chip on it comes from Intel, MediaTek, Realtek or Qualcomm, and AMD-branded modules on AM5 boards are made with MediaTek. Performance differences between them are small next to the effect of distance and walls, though driver quality varies and it is worth installing the current driver from the board maker's support page rather than relying on what Windows finds.
The antenna matters more than most people expect. It ships loose in the box and connects to the two rear connectors. Without it, a board may see the network from a metre away and nothing beyond. Place it on top of the desk or case, not behind a metal case against a wall.
Because it is loose in the box, the antenna is one of the accessories most easily left out when a board is returned. Adding WiFi to a board later
You have four routes, in rough order of how well they work.
- A PCIe WiFi card. This is the same kind of module the board makers use, mounted on a small card with its own antenna. It needs a free PCIe x1 slot that your graphics card does not cover, which can be a problem on Micro-ATX boards and usually rules it out on Mini-ITX, where the graphics card takes the only slot. For Bluetooth to work you must also run the card's cable to a spare USB 2.0 header on the board. Builders often skip this step and then wonder where Bluetooth is.
- A module in the board's own WiFi slot. Some non-WiFi boards still have the empty Key E slot and the cut-outs for antenna connectors. You can fit a module and an antenna kit. Check the manual first, because on many boards the slot is simply absent.
- A USB adapter. The simplest option and fine for browsing and streaming. Small ones without an external antenna have weaker reception, and latency is less consistent than with an internal card.
- A wire by another route. Powerline adapters or a mesh WiFi node with an Ethernet socket placed near the PC can both give a wired connection where running a cable is not practical.
One trap when buying a bare module: Intel sells two kinds. Models such as the AX200, AX210 and BE200 are standard parts that work in any compatible slot. Models such as the AX201, AX211 and BE201 rely on support built into Intel chipsets and will not work in an AMD board or on a generic PCIe adapter card. The names differ by a single digit.
WiFi or Ethernet
Every desktop board has a wired network port, and wired is still better wherever a cable can reach: lower and steadier latency, full speed regardless of walls, and nothing to configure. Current mainstream boards generally have 2.5 Gb Ethernet, with 5 Gb or 10 Gb on expensive models. Older and entry-level boards have 1 Gb. The port speed only matters if your router or switch matches it. For online games in particular, a cable beats any generation of WiFi, so treat the board's WiFi as the fallback and the convenience, not the first choice.
What to do
- Buy the WiFi version unless you are certain the PC will always be wired and you will never want Bluetooth.
- Do not pay a large premium for WiFi 7 over WiFi 6E, or 6E over 6, unless your router makes use of it.
- On an open-box board, confirm the antenna is in the box and test both WiFi and Bluetooth within the returns window.
- If you add a PCIe card later, connect its USB cable.

Questions people ask
Do motherboards without WiFi have Bluetooth?
Almost never. On motherboards, Bluetooth is part of the WiFi module, so the non-WiFi version of a board has neither. You can add both with a PCIe WiFi card, as long as you connect its cable to a USB 2.0 header, or add Bluetooth alone with a small USB adapter.
Is WiFi 7 worth paying extra for on a motherboard?
Only if you have or will soon buy a WiFi 7 router and you run Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. With an older router the board behaves like an older WiFi device. If the WiFi 7 version costs about the same, take it; if it costs noticeably more, WiFi 6 or 6E will serve just as well.
Can I add WiFi to a motherboard that does not have it?
Yes. A PCIe WiFi card is the best option if you have a free slot. A USB adapter is the easiest. Some boards also have an empty internal slot for a wireless module, but check the manual, because many non-WiFi boards leave it out.
Why is the WiFi signal on my new PC so weak?
Check the antenna first. It comes loose in the box and has to be attached to the two connectors on the rear panel; without it the range is a metre or two. Move the antenna on to the desk or the top of the case, away from the metal back of the PC, and install the current driver from the board maker.
Is onboard WiFi good enough for gaming?
With a strong signal, yes, and many people game on it without trouble. A cable still gives lower and steadier latency, because WiFi shares the air with every other device nearby. If you can run an Ethernet cable to the PC, use it for gaming and keep WiFi as the backup.
