X670 is a high-end AM5 chipset from 2022. It has the same two-chip layout as X670E, which means plenty of M.2 slots, SATA and USB, and it allows CPU overclocking. What it leaves out is the guarantee of a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot. It has been succeeded by the 800-series, so X670 boards are now older stock. The ones we track are on the X670 deals page.

Where X670 sits
AMD launched AM5 in 2022 with X670E, X670, B650E and B650. X670 and X670E both use two chipset chips; the B650 pair use one. The second chip is what separates X from B in that generation: more PCIe 4.0 lanes and more SATA and USB ports for the board maker to share out.
The difference between X670 and X670E is the PCIe 5.0 guarantee. X670E boards must have PCIe 5.0 for both the graphics slot and an M.2 slot. X670 guarantees PCIe 5.0 at most for an M.2 slot, depending on the board, and its graphics slot is normally PCIe 4.0.
X670 has no direct successor. In the 800-series, X870E is the only two-chip chipset; X870 uses a single chip and is closer to B650E with USB4 added. If you want two-chip connectivity without paying for the top tier, X670 is the only chipset that offers it.

Any PCIe 5.0 lanes come from the processor. The chipset's lanes are PCIe 4.0, and both chips share one PCIe 4.0 link back to the CPU. That shared link is rarely a limit in ordinary use, but it is why the main SSD belongs in the M.2 slot wired directly to the processor.
Compatible CPUs and memory
X670 supports Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000G and Ryzen 9000 processors. Memory is DDR5 only, with EXPO and XMP profiles, and both CPU and memory overclocking are allowed. AMD has said AM5 is supported through 2027 and beyond.
As with every 600-series board, the BIOS needs to be recent enough for the chip. X670 boards were built for Ryzen 7000; Ryzen 9000 support arrived by BIOS update in 2024. A board with its original BIOS may not start with a newer chip. A BIOS flashback button lets you update with no processor fitted, so look for one on the listing. How much the missing guarantee matters
Current graphics cards lose nothing noticeable in a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot compared with PCIe 5.0. For a build today, X670 and X670E perform the same. The E version is insurance for a future graphics card that might make use of the faster slot. If you keep boards for many years, that may be worth something to you; if you replace the platform every few years, it is not. Do you need PCIe 5.0 looks at both cases.
X670 against B650 and B850
Against a B-series board, X670 offers connectivity, not speed. A Ryzen chip runs the same on both. X670 earns its place when you will fill the slots: three or four NVMe drives, several SATA drives, a capture or network card, and many USB devices at once. If that is not you, a good B650 or B850 board does the same job, and a B850 board also guarantees a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot.
What varies by board
- PCIe 5.0 M.2. Many X670 boards have one such slot, but confirm it on the specification.
- M.2 and SATA count, and which slots share lanes with each other. The manual lists combinations that disable a port.
- Power delivery. Usually good at this tier; VRMs explained covers when it matters.
- WiFi and Ethernet. Boards of 2022 mostly have WiFi 6E and 2.5 gigabit Ethernet where fitted, but check.
- Size. Mostly ATX.
Who should buy X670
X670 suits a storage-heavy or workstation-style AM5 build when you find a board reduced to around B850 money. Comparatively few X670 models were made, so the choice is narrow; do not wait for a particular model if another board meets the need. At full price it is hard to recommend over a newer B850 or X870 board.
